Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, and it's no accident that many of our cruisetours begin and end in this major metropolis. As locals say, "Anchorage is great. It's only 20 minutes from Alaska." Here, you'll find everything you would find in a city in the lower 48. But it serves as a great introduction to Alaska, too.
Activities
- For a great introduction to native Alaskan culture, visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Opened in 1999, this wonderful, state-of-the-art center features theaters, exhibitions, artists and artisans, a smokehouse, a carving center, and traditional village structures.
- Head to Resolution Park for a breathtaking view of the Talkeetnas and the snow-covered Alaska Range.
- Learn about the Northern Lights, oil exploration, bears, and other local features at the Imaginarium. This award-winning, hands-on science center is great for kids and adults alike.
- Surrounded by state and national parkland, Anchorage is also the ideal base camp for Southcentral Alaska wildlife viewing adventures.
Shopping
- Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers Cooperative. Step inside for a look and feel of qiviut ("key-vee-ute"), the soft underwool of the musk ox. The wool is hand knit into warm garments by Natives in western Alaska.
- Saturday Market (Anchorage Markets). Local farmers and artisans sell their goods in this festival atmosphere - downtown at 3rd Ave. & E Street from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Also held Wednesdays at Northway Mall. May - Sept
- First Friday Art Walk. Local artists are in the spotlight the first Friday of each month when Anchorage galleries stay open late. This monthly celebration and opening of new shows attracts hundreds to the downtown area to see new work. Pick up a copy of the Anchorage Press, which publishes a map on the Thursday, one day prior to the event.
- Alaska Native Medical Center Craft Shop. Find a wide selection of Native art including spirit masks, slippers, dolls, ivory, beadwork, and dance fans. Mon.-Fri, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and first and third Sat., 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
- The Ulu Factory. Inuit (Eskimo) Natives invented this knife (pronounced "ooloo") centuries ago for every imaginable domestic cutting need. Learn the history, and see how they are being manufactured today.
- Chocolate Waterfall. View a real chocolate waterfall, and see the factory where wild Alaska berries are processed and turned into various candies. Open year round; 5225 Juneau Street.
- Anchorage Museum Shop. Find authentic Native art, crafts and books on Alaska. Open during Museum hours.
